FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Everything you need to know

Can I join the Sailing Team even if I have no sailing experience?

No experience is required to the join the sailing team. A good portion of the sailing team has sailors who had never sailed before.

What do I need to bring when coming to a Learn to Sail, Open Sail or Team Practice?

Sailors should wear clothes that they do not mind getting wet, we prefer that sailors do not wear cotton as it does not dry fast. Shoes are required at all times at our sailing facility. Therefore, we recommend sailors to wear dinghy boots or water shoes. Sailors should also bring a towel, extra change of clothes, water and sunscreen.

What if I do not know how to swim?

It is required by law that sailors on small boats wear life jackets. Life jackets of all sizes are provided for both the team and club. If you do not know how to swim, then we will offer sailors some basic swim lessons in the event your life jacket does tear or slip off you while sailing.

What if I do not have a car to get to the sailing facility?

Sailors can use our Carpool Channel on Slack. Slack is the club & team's primary method of communication. If you are having trouble joining Slack, please contact us so that we can bring you up to date and join the club.

How do I get my US Sailing Level 1 Certification?

Our club & team do not certify any individual for their US Sailing Level 1 certification, but we can help you gain some experience before taking your paper and in-person exams. If you are seeking a US Sailing Level 1 certification, please contact us so that we can allow you time to teach at Learn to Sails and practice on our safety boat.

How do I join the club and learn to Sail?

All you need to do is join the Sailing Club at ERAU on Campus Groups to receive emails and updates. We recommend following our Instagram @erausailing and joining our Slack to receive all updates/notifications.
